The challenges of delivering care to a non-English speaking patient, with a rare sarcomatoid gastric cancer

Clinical management of patients with rare cancers can be challenging, but is further complicated when patients are not fluent in English, and require a translator. This article presents a clinical case study of a non-English speaking patient’s journey through treatment, and surprisingly symptom-free survivorship, following diagnosis of an extremely rare gastric cancer. The article also discusses general aspects of gastric cancer and the rare sarcomatoid histology. The challenges for nurses caring for this patient are also discussed to illustrate their attempts to provide holistic care.
