Supervision is an important resource for nursing and there is an extensive evidence base to support its use. However, a clear understanding of the process is essential to improve the quality of supervision. This article reports on the results of a review of supervision at an adult mental health and learning disability directorate at a foundation trust in London, which highlighted areas of good practice and areas for improvement. Overall, the review found that most of the nurses received supervision in line with trust policy and they recognise it as essential to practice. The review also identified the need for more training and support for supervisors, and the need to ensure that supervision remains clinically focused rather than becoming an exercise in monitoring data quality and governance.
