Nursing Standard has been nominated in two of the categories for this year’s Medical Journalists’ Association (MJA) Awards.

RCNi's flagship title has been recognised for its work in the categories of Podcast of the Year and Editor of the Year.

Podcast praised for being ‘perfectly targeted for its audience’

Judges praised the work of Nursing Standard editor Flavia Munn and senior nurse editor Richard Hatchett for the podcast Top tips for nursing students and its inclusion of nurses from different backgrounds.

‘The podcast was perfectly targeted for the audience,’ noted the judging panel. ‘The inclusion of nurses with different backgrounds and experiences meant the voices were varied, engaging and gave a real flavour of the challenges of nursing today.’

Nursing Standard editor Flavia Munn has also been nominated for Editor of the Year.

Reader engagement illustrated by response to working conditions questionnaire

The MJA judges particularly highlighted reader engagement.

‘This magazine looks good and is obviously involved with its readers, with more than 5,000 responding to a questionnaire about working conditions. The results showed how unappreciated they felt with staff shortages of 40,000 and a lack of resources and emotional support. This was balanced with a lavishly illustrated celebration of Florence Nightingale’s bicentenary.’

Ms Munn said the nominations reflected the work of the whole Nursing Standard team.

A welcome acknowledgement in the Year of the Nurse and Midwife

‘I’m delighted with this recognition from the MJA, which is testament to the hard work and talent of the entire Nursing Standard team, including our nurse contributors. In what is an incredibly challenging year for nursing – and also, poignantly, the Year of the Nurse and Midwife – any acknowledgement of this fantastic profession is welcome.’

The MJA Awards showcase the breadth, depth and excellence of UK health and medical journalism.

The awards ceremony will be a virtual event this year and winners of the awards will be announced on the MJA website at 12 noon on 23 September.
