How do you build trust and rapport with young people affected by knife crime – and develop your own communication skills, too?

In the latest episode of the Nursing Standard podcast, emergency nurse Ana Waddington talks about her award-winning project helping young people at risk of serious violence.

YourStance teaches young people cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic life support skills

Ms Waddington set up the outreach programme YourStance, which teaches young people cardiopulmonary resuscitation, basic life support and haemorrhage control. In 2020 she was named RCN Nurse of the Year for this work.

In the podcast, Ms Waddington talks about how she engages with the young people most at-risk of knife crime, and how she has inspired some of them to enter the NHS. She also explains how her work with YourStance has improved her communication skills with young people she treats in emergency departments.

When the podcast interview was first conducted, Ms Waddington was an emergency department sister at Royal London Hospital. She is now a trauma coordinator at the same hospital.

The RCN Nursing Awards (formerly the RCNi Nurse Awards) are now open for entries.
