You have a low mood, feel exhausted and irritable, and aren’t sleeping well. It may be the demands of nursing – but could it be the perimenopause or menopause?

In the latest Nursing Standard podcast, menopause specialist and GP Louise Newson discusses how to identify these life changes.

How to recognise the symptoms of menopause

Dr Newson talks to RCNi head of news and features Kat Keogh about nurses who thought their symptoms were work-related rather than signs of the perimenopause or menopause.

She explains how to monitor these symptoms and prepare for a medical consultation to seek treatment. She also talks about the benefits of hormone replacement therapy to alleviate symptoms and the role of diet, sleep and exercise, as well as related lack of motivation.

She emphasises that it is possible to have a good menopause and stay in work with the right treatment and lifestyle.
