The barriers to healthcare encountered by single homeless people

Charlotte Eavis Practice nurse, Goldington medical practice, Bedford, Bedfordshire, England

Homelessness is complex and has implications for every part of a homeless person’s life. There is a well-established link between homelessness, physical and mental ill health, and premature death. This is further exacerbated by homeless people encountering barriers to healthcare that hinder their ability to access appropriate services. Health professionals have an important role in breaking down these barriers. The aim of this paper is to explore these barriers and make recommendations to help health professionals remove them.
