Information and support are fundamental to patients’ understanding of their condition and treatment options, and clinical nurse specialists have played an essential role in developing such services for cancer patients in recent years. This paper describes the development of a nurse-led clinic in a London district general hospital in which breast cancer patients’ receive the results of their histological tests and initial emotional support from a Macmillan breast care nurse specialist prior to their medical consultation. The paper discusses the role of the nurse specialist in providing such a service, and summarises the results of a clinical audit designed to assess patient satisfaction with the service described. It then discusses the clinical value of such clinics and postulates a role for their wider implementation.
