<p>Aim The aim of this study was to explore the approval and funding of new cancer treatments by the NHS and the perspectives of people involved in the process, using the example of bortezomib, a treatment for multiple myeloma.</p> <p>Method An exploratory, first-level descriptive approach using a literature review and semi-structured interviews with six participants. Content analysis was used to refine the interview results.</p> <p>Findings There were conflicting views about the fairness of the process of funding cancer treatments by the NHS. One perspective showed a concern for universality and consistency. The opposing perspective valued a flexible definition of fairness that appreciated the needs of a relatively small group.</p> <p>Conclusion This study has implications for NHS staff and patients. It could lead to a better understanding of the processes for funding new cancer treatments by the NHS to ensure they are used appropriately and continue to be evaluated and improved.</p>
