The potential for improving nurses’ communication skills is often limited by nurses and other health professionals lack of motivation to use such skills effectively. This article explores some of the issues that work against the development of therapeutic communication and offers some suggestions for enhancing the effectiveness of nurses’ communication with patients with cancer. Some implications for skills training programmes are set out.
