Excellence in Cancer Research Award is open for entries

Cancer research nurses are invited to enter the RCNi Nurse Awards 2017, the UK nursing profession’s highest accolade for excellence.
The awards showcase the dedication, creativity and passion of nurses in providing high-quality patient care across the health service.
Sponsored by Cancer Research UK, the Excellence in Cancer Research Award recognises the vital role clinical research nurses play in cancer research and improving patient outcomes.
The category is open to NHS or independent sector nurses who have demonstrated excellence in cancer clinical research.
Opportunity
This year’s winners were a team of research nurses from a variety of London and Oxford trusts who led a study for the Bone Cancer Research Trust exploring perceptions and experiences of bone cancer trials among teenagers.
Oxford Brookes University senior lecturer in cancer care Verna Lavender said winning the award was a fantastic opportunity.
‘Our aim was to improve outcomes for young people with bone cancer. We know participation in clinical trials has an influence,’ she said.
‘We hope our findings, alongside further research, will contribute to strategies that increase enrolment of teenagers and young adults in clinical trials.’

Nurses, midwives and health visitors – as well as assistant practitioners, healthcare assistants and nursing students – will all have opportunities to enter awards across 13 categories:

- Community Nursing Award (sponsored by Superdrug).
- Excellence in Cancer Research Award (sponsored by Cancer Research UK).
- Innovations in your Specialty.
- Leadership Award.
- Learning Disability Nursing Award (sponsored by NHS England).
- Mental Health Practice Award.
- Nursing Older People Award.
- Patient’s Choice (sponsored by Yakult).
- RCN Healthcare Assistant Award (sponsored by the RCN).
Cancer Nursing Practice specialist journal editor Lisa Berry, who was on this year’s judging panel, encouraged cancer nurses to enter the category.
She said: ‘Given the year-round unrelenting pressure on services, it’s more important than ever to enter the awards and shine a light on initiatives that have improved care for your patients.’
Winner
An overall Nurse of the Year award will also be chosen by the judges from the winners on the night.
Nurses can either nominate themselves, their team or be nominated by a colleague.
