The accuracy and reliability of the tympanic membrane thermometer a literature review

In our paediatric A&E department we use a tympanic membrane thermometer (TMT) for the recording of children’s temperatures, both at initial assessment and for detecting shifts in temperature during a child’s stay. Concerns have been raised in the department regarding the accuracy and reliability of this method after false highs and lows were detected, which may have led to the under or over investigation of children with potentially serious consequences.
