<p>This article describes how an A&E department has responded to increasing service pressures to manage A&E patient throughput more effectively, and considers the impact these changes have had on A&E nursing. The response involved the development of a purpose-built six-bed pre-admission unit (PAU) next to the A&E department to accommodate patients awaiting hospital admission.</p>
