<p>The management of children who require minor surgical procedures can be particularly challenging. In older children and adults, procedures such as suturing of wounds, removal of foreign bodies and nail bed repairs are performed under local anaesthetic because these patients have the cognitive ability to understand the rationale for such procedures, and can therefore co-operate in them.</p>
