Exploration of the correlation between sleep problems and suicidal ideation in adolescents

There has been an increase in the number of adolescents who display self-harm behaviours, and suicidal ideation, and it is important to explore the reasons for this. The literature suggests that there is a link between these issues and sleep problems, but also suggests that bullying, school stressors and change in family dynamics might also play a part. This article critically appraises some of the literature on the link between sleep problems and suicidal ideation in adolescents, and finds there is a significant correlation. However, other external factors are also implicated.
