Effect of nutritional status and musculoskeletal pain on community-dwelling older people in Hong Kong

Aim

To explore the influence of health and social factors on the quality of life (QOL) of community-dwelling older people in Hong Kong (HK).

Method

In this retrospective study, the QOL of 161 older people living in the community in HK was assessed using the World Health Organization QOL-BREF(HK). Data on nutritional status and cognitive function were included in the assessment. The influence of the measured health and social factors on QOL was assessed using multiple linear regressions.

Results

The regression models were significant for overall health perception and the WHOQOL-BREF(HK) domains of physical health, psychological, social relationships, and environment. The presence of musculoskeletal pain in the previous three months and nutritional status were associated with physical health, psychological and environment domains. Nutritional status was also associated with the social relationships domain.

Conclusion

Nutritional status and presence of musculoskeletal pain significantly affected the QOL of the population studied. Healthcare professionals should focus on these aspects to prevent disability, enhance QOL and reduce demands on healthcare services.
