The role of asset-based approaches in community nursing

The population of the UK is changing – people are living longer and the number of people with long-term health conditions is increasing rapidly. The NHS is also experiencing a period of financial difficulties. To meet these challenges, radical changes in the provision of healthcare and social care are needed. Asset-based approaches focus on the creation of health – what keeps us healthy – rather than the prevention of illness – what makes us sick. Traditionally, asset-based approaches have focused on community activities such as time-banking, social prescribing, co-production and community development. However, applying the principles in community nursing can be a powerful mechanism for change and improve the health and well-being of people with long-term conditions.
