Not enough consideration is given to the difficulties that many patients with diabetes encounter as a result of their inherited genes or their lifestyle. By focusing on these interactions, healthcare professionals can help patients understand their pharmacological interventions and why adherence to relevant lifestyle advice is necessary in controlling their condition. This article highlights the genes involved in the aetiology of diabetes and how genes can influence patient treatment. Current pharmacology is explored and hypotheses are made regarding how medicines can be individualised to patients.
