The balance of care is shifting to the community, fiscal constraints are becoming tighter and there is a changing demographic with a growing older population. These factors, among others, require better evidence-based health care. Nurses working in primary and community healthcare settings will need to ensure that their practice is effective and efficient. They will need the skills to articulate and use the evidence base in practice, and understand why and how to develop research relevant to their practice.
