<p>EPILEPSY CAUSES about 1,000 deaths each year in the UK (Nash and Brown 1996) and is the commonest chronic neurological disorder. Some of these deaths are due to accidents or status epilepticus. However, a large number of deaths from epilepsy are not adequately explained. Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the syndrome where a person with epilepsy dies suddenly and no other cause of death is revealed.</p>
