<p>Part one of this article describes the development of the nurse practitioner role in the UK. Part two reports on a research study examining whether or not community nurse practitioners were able to achieve a ‘higher level of practice’ as envisaged by the United Kingdom Central Council and will be published in next week’s Nursing Standard.</p>
