Aim and intended learning outcomes

The aim of this article is to explore the nurse’s role in the care and rehabilitation of patients who have had a stroke. After reading the article, the nurse will be able to:

Express his or her knowledge and understanding of the principles of nursing care in acute stroke

Explore the common physical, psychological and social problems of stroke

Explain the reasons for planned interventions

Demonstrate the ways in which communication can be facilitated in the dysphasic patient

Review the contribution made by the various members of the interdisciplinary team

Discuss the nurse's contribution to the rehabilitation of stroke patients.
