Lucy Letby renews her appeal against murder convictions

Three judges will decide whether to grant leave to appeal to former nurse, whose initial attempt was turned down by Court of Appeal in January
Child serial killer Lucy Letby has renewed her appeal against her convictions for the murder of seven babies and attempted murder of six others.
Her initial application for permission to appeal was refused by the Court of Appeal in January. The former nurse was sentenced to a whole-life prison term last August for the crimes, committed in 2015 and 2016 when she was working as a children’s nurse on the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital.

She denied all charges and lodged an appeal in September, which was rejected by a judge on 31 January without a hearing.
Letby faces retrial on one attempted murder charge
Her renewed appeal will now be heard in court before three judges, who will decide whether to grant leave to appeal. No date has yet been fixed for the hearing, the Judicial Office said.
Letby, the most prolific child killer in modern British history, will face a retrial in June on one charge of attempting to murder a baby girl after the jury in her original trial was unable to reach a verdict on that allegation.
Statutory inquiry will look at related factors
The Department of Health and Social Care announced a statutory inquiry into Letby’s crimes following her conviction.
It will be led by Lady Justice Thirlwall and look at the conduct of clinical and non-clinical staff, the structures of raising concerns, the experiences of babies and their parents named in the indictment, and the effectiveness of governance and external regulation, including by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Letby was formally struck off the UK register in December.
