Nurse who died from COVID-19 remembered as ‘an advocate for her patients’
Mother of two Veronica Guy was ‘extremely loved’ by colleagues in renal unit
Colleagues have paid tribute to a ‘vibrant’ and much-loved nurse who died from COVID-19.
Senior staff nurse Veronica Guy – known as Ronnie – worked at the renal unit at County Hospital in Stafford for more than 20 years, first as a healthcare assistant and then a registered nurse.
She died on 4 September at Royal Stoke University Hospital, Stoke-on-Trent.
Nurse shared her own renal transplant experience with patients
Renal unit sister Sally Davies said Ms Guy would be remembered for her sense of fun and vibrant personality.
‘She was an advocate for her patients, having had a renal transplant herself, and was able to share her lived experience with our patients,’ she said.
Ms Guy worked as a healthcare assistant for more than 26 years before training to be a nurse and qualifying in 2006.
She was employed as a healthcare assistant in the hospital’s theatre department before moving to the renal unit.
‘She was incredibly well known and extremely loved by her colleagues at County Hospital,’ said Ms Davies.
NHS trust pays its respects to Veronica Guy
University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust chief executive Tracy Bullock said Ms Guy would be sorely missed.
‘Our deepest sympathies are with her family at this very sad time, and we thank them for her many years of service,’ she added.
Ms Guy leaves her husband Colin, two sons Lee and Craig, and three grandchildren.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics on Covid-19 deaths show more than 250 nurses and healthcare assistants have died from COVID-19 in England and Wales since the start of the pandemic.
