Nurse lecturer’s murder: estranged husband given life sentence for ‘merciless’ killing

Nursing lecturer Claire Chick’s estranged husband was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 27 years for her murder. Paul Butler, 53, admitted stabbing his estranged wife more than 20 times outside her flat in January 2025. Ms Chick, 48, was University of Plymouth nursing school’s associate head of international. Plymouth Crown Court heard she had been subjected to months of stalking, harassment and violence at the hands of Butler, a former doorman. Her daughters chose to address their mother’s killer in court, telling him of the anguish he had caused. Ms Chick’s university colleagues have described her as a respected nurse and lecturer and an inspiring person.
