Nurses exploring ways to improve the well-being of colleagues can apply to a fund set up in memory of a nurse who died by suicide.

The Amin Abdullah RCN Foundation Grant makes annual awards of up to £1,000 for nurse-led projects focusing on nurses’ mental health and well-being.

Inspiration for the fund

The fund was set up in 2022 in memory of Mr Abdullah who died by suicide in 2016 after being dismissed from his job at Charing Cross Hospital in London.

An independent inquiry later found he had been treated unfairly by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs the hospital.

The fund is now open for applications with a deadline of 10 November.

Supporting nurses ‘has a direct impact on patient care’

RCN Foundation director Deepa Korea said: ‘The mental health and well-being of nursing and midwifery staff across health and social care in the UK is a key priority for the RCN Foundation. We are delighted to be working with the friends and family of Amin for a second year to offer this important grant.

‘Evidence shows that supporting the health and well-being of nursing staff has a direct impact on patient care, and so it is vital that we deliver initiatives such as this one. We feel privileged to be able to help honour Amin’s memory in this way by creating positive outcomes for nursing staff.’

Research undertaken by last year’s grant recipients

Two projects were awarded £1,000 grants in 2022. One, based at Canterbury Christ Church University, examined the efficacy of a support programme for nursing students.

The other, by researchers at Keele University, explored issues affecting the mental and physical well-being of nurses working in clinical practice.

The grant is open to all registered nurses in the UK. Nurses do not need to be a member of the RCN to apply.
